Funding Open Access Publishing (APCs/BPCs)
Many institutions and funding agencies support the use of research grants to cover Article Processing Charges (APCs) and Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for open access publishing. Authors are encouraged to check with their institution or funder regarding available support.

Examples of Supportive Funders Include:

  • USA: NSF, NASA, Gates Foundation, HHMI, SPARC

  • Canada: Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC)

  • UK & EU: UKRI, Horizon Europe, ERC

  • Australia: ARC, NHMRC

  • Asia & Africa: JSPS (Japan), NRF (South Africa), and others

Institutional Support for Open Access Publishing

 Below are examples of institutional OA funds:

  • Boston College – Up to $3,000 per author/year; $25,000 fund

  • Carleton University$2,500 per article, max $5,000 per author/year

  • Colorado State University$2,000 for OA journals, $1,250 for hybrid; $45,000 fund

  • Emory University$1,500 per article or book; one award/year per author

  • UC Berkeley$3,000 per OA article; $54,000+ fund

  • University of Florida$3,000 for OA, $1,500 for hybrid; $120,000 total

  • University of Toronto – Up to $3,000 per author/year; $55,000 fund
