Synopsis

Universities are no longer just places of learning; they are becoming living laboratories for the future of smart cities. This chapter explores how higher education institutions can integrate artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and data analytics to create smarter, more resilient campuses. Drawing on a comprehensive review of the literature and real-world case studies like the University of Malaga's Smart-Campus initiative, the chapter examines what makes a campus truly smart and how these technologies can transform administration, operations, and community life. The discussion moves beyond technology for its own sake, focusing instead on how smart tools can improve space management, student services, financial operations, security, and sustainability. It also addresses the real challenges institutions face, such as making different systems work together, protecting privacy and data, earning user trust, and ensuring that automation does not come at the cost of human connection. The chapter shows that technology must be intuitive, transparent, and responsive to the needs of students, faculty, and staff. The chapter offers practical recommendations for institutions embarking on this journey, emphasizing participatory design, strong governance, and a commitment to sustainability. When implemented effectively, smart campuses could serve as models for future cities, where innovation and well-being coexist.
