Synopsis

The authors explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning on the roles of educators in Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) environments in Zimbabwe. As educational institutions increasingly adopt these technologies, there is a pressing need to understand how they reshape teaching practices and the responsibilities of educators. The problem addressed is the lack of clarity regarding the transformation of educator roles and the challenges faced in integrating AI within the unique context of Zimbabwean education. The primary objectives of this research are to explore the changes in educator roles due to AI integration, assess the effectiveness of AI tools in enhancing teaching practices, and identify the implications for professional development in Zimbabwean ODeL settings. A hybrid-methods approach was employed, utilizing qualitative interviews with educators and quantitative surveys to gather comprehensive data on their experiences and perceptions. Findings revealed that AI technologies significantly facilitate personalized learning experiences and enhance student engagement, leading to a shift towards more facilitator-oriented roles for educators. However, challenges such as insufficient training and concerns about data privacy were also identified. The implications suggested that educational institutions must prioritize professional development to equip educators with the necessary skills to leverage AI tools effectively. Recommendations include the establishment of targeted training programs and collaborative platforms for educators to share experiences and strategies. Future studies should focus on the long-term effects of AI on educational outcomes and further explore ethical considerations in the Zimbabwean context. In conclusion, while AI presents substantial opportunities for enhancing teaching practices, a careful approach to integrating these technologies is essential for the future of education in Zimbabwe.
