Call for essays: The First in the Family Book Project

The First in the Family Book Project Lumina Foundation and STAR Scholars invite students, researchers, faculty, and practitioners to contribute to a groundbreaking book series capturing the transformative experiences at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and beyond. Be a part of a legacy that documents the powerful narratives of equity, justice, and social mobility.  

Through case studies, empirical research, and success stories, this collection aims to showcase the contributions of these institutions to social mobility, knowledge growth, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) with a focus on:

  • First-generation college student experiences
  • Narratives from HBCU and MSI faculty, students, and alumni
  • Case studies on effective equity and racial justice policies
  • Successful DEI initiatives
  • Impact stories related to social and economic upper mobility
