ABSTRACT
The uptake of languages at the upper secondary education level in the United Kingdom (UK) has been in decline since the study of modern languages was made non-compulsory nearly 20 years ago. To understand a pupil’s decision to discontinue a subject, one must consider the motivational factors at play. In examining the research dedicated to motivation in language learning, culture emerges as a critical component. Furthermore, culture is a required element of the distinct curricula of the UK. This chapter examines current practice related to cultural education in the French classroom through original survey research of UK modern language teachers. Survey data is presented to provide insight into of the role of culture in the UK French classroom and suggest areas for improvement. An improved approach to cultural education has the potential to increase the uptake of French at the upper secondary level and beyond.
