Synopsis

This chapter critically investigates whether strong university rankings guarantee high-quality education. It argues that major ranking systems often privilege research output, reputation, and bibliometric indicators while underrepresenting teaching quality, student experience, inclusion, and institutional mission. By comparing ranking metrics with broader quality assurance perspectives, the chapter exposes the risks of composite indices, strategic gaming, and misrepresentation. It advocates more transparent, reflective, and stakeholder-informed assessment models that balance accountability with educational values.
