Synopsis

This chapter examines the marketization of higher education and its effects on institutional strategy, governance, funding, and competitive positioning. It traces how neoliberal reforms, tuition dependence, rankings, branding, and entrepreneurial management have reshaped universities’ missions and public responsibilities. The chapter analyzes how institutions compete for students, faculty, resources, and prestige through branding, partnerships, and internationalization. It also critiques the risks of commodifying education, including inequity, mission drift, and weakened academic values, while proposing balanced policy responses.
