Synopsis

This chapter examines the accreditation requirements of NEP 2020, makes a case for transitioning to a trust-based and outcome-based system, outlines critical implementation issues, and provides recommendations for the successful and effective implementation of the new accreditation system, proposing an appropriate framework for Indian higher education. The current research employed a qualitative research method, using documentary analysis. This chapter concludes by noting that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 transforms accreditation in Indian higher education by changing it from a compliance-based exercise to a trust-based, outcome-oriented, and developmental quality assurance mechanism. The suggested reorganization of HECI and the introduction of the National Accreditation Council are expected to contribute to improvements in institutional freedom, responsibility, and accountability. Although the policy has created major opportunities in terms of graded accreditation and the integration of digital and outcome-based evaluation, its practical implementation faces challenges related to infrastructural gaps, regulatory complexity, and disparities in institutional capacity. To ameliorate these issues, the chapter suggests a coordinated accreditation model to meet NEP 2020 requirements as learner-centered, inclusive, research-oriented, and responsive. In general, the accreditation vision of NEP 2020 will be successful in its implementation only with long-lasting policy support, capacity building, and alignment of stakeholder involvement.
