Synopsis

This chapter examines accreditation as a central mechanism for assuring quality, accountability, and institutional credibility in contemporary higher education. It argues that accreditation can also serve as a strategic driver of research excellence when embedded within coherent institutional and policy frameworks. Drawing on quality assurance theories, empirical studies, and illustrative cases, the chapter explores how accreditation influences research culture, governance, infrastructure, faculty development, and institutional capacity. It demonstrates that accreditation can align institutional missions with research priorities, strengthen support systems, and promote rigorous, ethical, and evidence-based knowledge production. At the same time, the chapter critically considers challenges such as administrative burden, limited resources, compliance-oriented practices, and overly narrow definitions of research excellence. It concludes by offering implications for policymakers, university leaders, and academic communities, while identifying directions for future research. Overall, accreditation is presented not only as a regulatory requirement but also as a strategic tool for sustaining research quality and improving institutional performance.
